Ambassador Pressman Honors Cardinal Mindszenty

On November 13, U.S. Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman hosted representatives of the Cardinal Mindszenty Foundation and Catholic students to honor the memory of Cardinal József Mindszenty.

Ambassador Pressman joined Mr. Imre Ugron, Acting Co-Chair of the Cardinal Mindszenty Foundation, in placing a wreath at a commemorative plaque honoring the Cardinal and memorializing the time he spent in refuge inside the American chancery on Szabadság tér. Ambassador Pressman told visitors: “We find strength in the unique historical significance and resilience Cardinal Mindszenty embodied.  We honor the role the United States played in supporting the Cardinal’s vision and leadership, and we pay tribute to his work and his sacrifice.”

Escaping persecution from communist authorities, Cardinal József Mindszenty sheltered inside the U.S. Embassy for a period of fifteen years beginning on November 4, 1956, taking up residence in what is now the U.S. Ambassador’s office.  While providing the visitors a tour of the historic suite, Ambassador Pressman expressed special appreciation to the students, saying he is heartened to know that young Hungarians continue to learn about Cardinal Mindszenty’s legacy of perseverance in the face of hardship and repression.
