Location: Budapest – Near the U.S. Embassy on Szabadság tér (Liberty Square)
Event: Pro-Russia (Anti-U.S.) protests will take place in front of the U.S. Embassy on April 30. At the same time nearby, pro-Ukraine supporters will be demonstrating. Hungarian police will be present at each of these events to monitor security. However, these demonstrations have the potential to turn violent. U.S. Embassy personnel have been advised to avoid these demonstrations and nearby areas:
Saturday, April 30 – 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Approximately 200 people are expected to gather in front of the U.S. Embassy on Szabadság tér (Liberty Square) to express solidarity with Russia.
Saturday, April 30 – 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Approximately 500 people will gather at Deák Ferenc tér to express solidarity with Ukraine. The group will proceed through Szent Istvan ter to Zrinyi utca to Nador utca, and will end their protest at Vértanúk tere, near the location where the pro-Russia event will take place.
Also happening this weekend, there will be pro-Ukraine marches proceeding from Széll Kálmán tér to the Embassy of Ukraine. These events are expected to be peaceful, but may cause traffic disruptions:
Saturday, April 30 & Sunday, May 1 – 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Approximately 50 people will march to express solidarity with Ukraine. They will gather in Széll Kálmán tér, then proceed through the streets of Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor to Városmajor to Diós árok to Rőzse utca to Trencséni utca to Zsibói utca to the Embassy of Ukraine located at Istenhegyi út 84/B.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid crowds and areas where demonstrators are gathering.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Comply with directions from local authorities.
- Keep a low profile.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
